3D camera

Although 3D cameras have been around for a good few years 2009 was the year when the first mass-market 3D camera went on sale and 2010/11 will be the year when other companies follow suit.

Fuji are the developer and manufacturer of the first 3D camera called the FinePix REAL 3D W1. This is a fantastic piece of kit which shoots images in 3D as well as in 2D there is even a 'glasses-free' 3D display on the back. The look and feel of this camera is of the highest quality and a recommended buy for those who want to enter the world of digital 3D photography.

The beauty of Fuji's offering is that if you wanting physical 3D photo prints to show your friends and family Fujifilm will provide just that, developing the prints in-house and sending them back to you.

How 3D cameras work?

A human’s ability to perceive depth comes from viewing an object along two different lines of sight. This illusion is named parallax. Modern cameras use a “Parallax Barrier System” to  direct light to the right and left eyes in a way that simulates parallax. Both enable easy and natural viewing of 3D images with just the naked eye.

In its simplest form the way 3D cameras work is use two lenses and highly powered megapixel sensors to achieve a stereoscopic 3D effect. This simultaneously takes and layers together two 2D images into a single 3D image.

New 3D cameras take two shots of the same subject from different positions, and the camera automatically merges and saves the captured images as a single 3D photograph. With Fujis new camera after the first photo is taken, it appears as a transparent overlay on the monitor to help you align and frame the second shot.

When it comes to recording images the photos captured by twin lens’ are processed and the left and right photos are merged into a single 3D image. The Fuji FinePix REAL 3D system adopts the MP or “multi-picture format”.
