3D Films

3DFILMS

2010 is the year for third dimension films aka 3D films. There were a few releases in 2009 however it is believed that 20 out of 170 movie blockbusters this year will be produced in 3D … a 100% increase on the last year!

So you want to experience 3D for yourself in the comfort of your own home. Well now you can as a number of titles have been released such as Final Destination 4 and My bloody valentine; Shrek, Coraline and Spy Kids are also available to buy in 3D.

It is worth pointing out that these films do not use new active 3D technology i.e. active shutter glasses but instead rely on either anaglyph or polarised glasses. New 3Dfilms such as Avatar, Alice in Wonderland etc. will need both active shutter glasses and a 3D ready TV to watch them. In addition you’ll need either a 3Dbluray or 3Ddvd player.

3dfilms

The following 3D films are all available from top stockists Play.com and Amazon. A number of films are only available in DVD format or Blu-ray format. We recommend choosing Blu-ray versions as the quality is a lot higher. Although most 3Dfilms come with the necessary glasses you can buy extra spare 3Dglasses so you can watch with your friends.

How 3Dfilms are made

Before we look at how 3D films are made it is important to know how we are able to view films in 3D. Each of our eyes sees our surroundings with a 6.5 cm gap in between them. Due to this gap each eye does not see exactly the same thing i.e the left eye sees slightly more on the left side than the right  and vice versa. It is down to the brain to combine the two images into one which creates the three dimenstional world we live in.

When it comes to 3Dfilms a special camera is used to shoot on two filmstrips simultaneously with each filmstrip acting if it was one of our eyes. The frames on the film are then projected onto the screen at the same time. For us to view the 3Dmovie and not just two overlapping images we have to wear 3D glasses. The glasses then simply enable the left eye to pick out only the shots from the left film projector and vice versa. Our brain then combines the images and hey presto you see the world in 3D.

Currently however developers are working on a way for 3Dtvs to broadcast the third dimension without the use of glasses … until then though you will have to don the specs.
