3D projectors
3Dprojectors
Since the beginning of 2010 there has been an incredible explosion of 3D projectors onto the market.
Yes 3Dprojectors are not the cheapest option around for displaying media in the third dimension … but arguably they are the most effective. A projector can transform the flat surface of any room wall into a stunning 3D screen.
Buy a 3Dprojector
All the following popular projectors are compatible with 3D technology. Where possible the Totally3D team have compared the price of a projector across a range of retailers such as Pixmania and Projectorsdirect to save you cash.
The most popular manufacturers of 3Dready projectors are ACER, VIEWSONIC, BENQ and OPTOMA. They all sell reasonably priced 3Dprojectors crammed full of technology. We recommend checking our buyers guide to choosing a projector.

A guide to buying a projector
The following criteria should all be taken into consideration when choosing a projector.
Resolution
The most common resolutions for home cinema projectors at present are 720p (1280 horizontal pixels x 720 vertical pixels) and 1080p (1920 horizontal pixels x 1080 vertical pixels). In general the higher the resolution the higher the number of pixels resulting in a sharper image. Higher resolution will also result in better picture quality from high def sources such as Blu-Ray or Sky HD. |
Contrast
The larger the contrast ratio of a projector, the greater the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a projector can show and the better its ability to create an image with depth. A contrast rating of 2000:1 would imply that the black level is two thousand times darker than the white. |
Brightness
The brightness of a projector is measured in lumens and tends to range from 700 – 2000 lumens. We recommend that you check the ambient light of the environment where the projector will be located to achieve the best picture.
Screen format
When you see terms such as 4:3 or 16:9 it’s refering to the picture size so a 4:3 would mean the screen is 4 units wide for every 3 units heigh.
Screen size
To select the size of the screen you firstly need to know the available throw distance (i.e. the distance between the front of the projector and the area you are projecting onto). It is also important to know that bigger does not always mean better. Just make sure the screen has efficient space within the room you are projecting in. |
Connectivity
Lamp life
Most projectors have a lamp life between 2000 to 4000 hours. When you see the term half-life it refers to the point at which the lamp is half a bright as it was when it was new. Unlike with 3DTVs replacing lamps is a cost that should be factored in when buying a projector. Regular cleaning of the filters can help you improve the life of a lamp, as will correct operation of the projector. |

LCD Vs DLP
Ever since its launch there’s been a battle between LCD (liquid crystal display) and DLP (digital light processing) technologies when viewing images. With LCD displays there is no rainbow effect which can be experienced on a DLP. However on a LCD you get a higher contrast ratio although true colours can be more saturated. Finally with an LCD you can get dead pixels which almost never happens on a DLP. You’ll find that nearly all 3Dprojectors tend to be DLP. |
